What Camping Gear Do I Need?

Camping Adventure

If you are planning a camping adventure you need an idea of what to take, to ensure an enjoyable experience . The wilderness offers little, so some campers tend to take way too much. On the other hand survival campers will set off with next to nothing, with the idea of pitting their wits against mother nature.

So what camping and survival gear should campers bring along?
Survival GearWell it should not be limited to sleeping and eating materials – and should not include everything with the kitchen sink thrown in for good measure.

Camping equipment can be roughly divided into these categories: tents, tools, toiletries, lighting, first aid, communication, food, clothes, sleeping and guides.

Together with your a tent (or tents), bring strong stakes, both wooden and metal as you never know on what kind of ground you will be pitching your tent.

Don’t forget to check your tent before leaving, as long term storage can cause problems and you will need to be sure you have all the necessary poles, mallets and guide ropes. Don’t forget the groundsheet or tarp as a base to keep the floor of your tent clean and dry.

Light Sleeping BagAlthough you may assume that a light sleeping bag is good in the summertime, you may still want to think about bringing along a heavier style sleeping bag.

Sleeping bags lined with warm fleece or a synthetic material and blankets made of wool can come in handy on a cold night.

In addition you may also want to think about bringing along a sleeping pad or an air mattress (with pump), as hard ground can be unforgiving.

Tools you may need include screwdrivers, a hammer, a camping knife, a Swiss Army knife, a small shovel, a camping saw, scissors, batteries, car maintenance equipment, and a fire extinguisher.

Extras for a longer trip can include repair tape, spare lantern generator, extra rope, tent leak sealers, and emergency flares.

Flashlight HandyKeep a flashlight handy with extra batteries and a bulb. Pack matches and a lighter for the campfire, or for torches, if the flashlight fails. Bring along battery operated camping lighters.

They are not as bright as gas lanterns, but they are safer, especially if you have youngsters with you.

If you must use gas lanterns, safely pack fuel and a funnel along with your camping gear. Use the funnel to add gas to the lantern when you run out, in order to keep fuel from leaking – and fires from starting.
If mosquitoes abound your campsite, don’t forget to bring citronella candles to light at night and keep them at bay.

Clothes, yes obviously, but be prepared for all eventualities, with climate change being what it is, murphy’s law can be activated at any time.

First Aid Kit A real first aid kit should be near the top of your list. Prescription medications, anti-allergy medicines, gauze, plaster,  wound and burn ointment should be handy in an easily located box.

Don’t forget to note the address and location of the nearest hospital, just in case a simple first aid kit will not suffice.

Complete camping gear should include communication equipment. Bring a fully charged cellular phone, there may or may not be a signal where you are – but there may. You can also take along walkie-talkies and a battery powered radio.

At least, the very basics of toiletries should be packed.

What camping trip would be complete without food? Pack as much non perishable food as you can carry. After all, it won’t spoil and can be used anytime after your trip.

CoolersStore everything in containers or coolers (which can be used for anything fresh you pick up en route), and don’t leave out serving spoons, pitch forks, tongs, a water canteen, a good eating knife, a can opener and even a corkscrew if you fancy a drop of home comfort.

For reheating leftovers, take along some aluminum foil. If you don’t want to cook over the bonfire, then bring along a propane grill or camp stove, with spare fuel.

Your camping trip can be enhanced  with maps and compass, as well as bird and plant books. Bring binoculars – and if you want to see the sky better at night, pack a telescope.

Leave nothing but footprints, and take nothing but pictures in the wild outdoors. And enjoy! It’s time to go camping!
